Sometimes, in order to move on in our lives - toward greater expansion of being and fulfilling life experience - we need to let go of old mindsets. But shedding old templates of thought can be very difficult, even when we know precisely what it is we want and what we must do to get there.
And it can be that much harder to let go of defeating patterns when we aren't clear about what we need, or even who we really are. Today's modern cultural landscape is filled with so many distractions, opinions, and momentary pursuits, that our minds can easily be filled with all manner of free-floating junk and background static so as to drown out our own thoughts and dreams.
Just like neglecting our homes and bodies can make us ill, our lack of psychic hygiene can make us equally sick. Individually and collectively, if we allow our unaddressed psychic material to build up, we may find that our psycho-emotional backlog starts to leak out through private outbursts, interpersonal and cultural conflict, global warfare, and environmental degradation. In this way, our external reality mirrors our own inner pollution, and until we take a clear look at our internal world, the one outside may escalate into further crisis.
6. CLEANING UP OUR MINDS
by Katarzyna Vedah. Aug. 4, 2018
Living in a hyper-aroused society, we may pursue shallow stimulation in order to get temporary relief from our deeper issues. Like a pebble across a pond, we may skip the surface of our real emotions, seeking distraction after distraction before the momentum runs out and we are forced to experience the depths of our reality.
If we remain unaware of what lies underneath - our values, needs, and the empty places within - we may set ourselves for a fall in a shame-based consumer culture that would exploit our pain and sense of lack for profit.
When our sense of self-worth (or very identity) is based on externals, it can feel like living in a game of Snakes & Ladders, up one minute, and down the next, trying to feed an inner need through superficial means.
But over the long term, we may find that the aspect of us that needed our deeper attention, ignored for too long, has become an insatiable demon or hungry ghost. It is these inner demons and ghosts that we really fear (essentially, ourselves) - the parts of us that are hidden, lost, or locked up in our own psyches.
For better or worse, our subconscious can be a powerful force that affects our lives. It can be a wellspring of creative energy and collective wisdom, but more often than not, many of us treat this part of our minds like the realm of Hades or Hell, as something to avoid (even as we build our homes over it and live off the fumes, mostly unaware of how our bodies, perspectives, and behaviors are affected by it.)
Exploring the depths of our psyche is no easy feat and can often stir up deep wounding we would rather ignore. But perhaps it's time to clear the white noise, heal our internal conflicts, reclaim our projections, and move toward integration - not only with ourselves, but with others, our communities and the natural world.
