Imagine a space particle drawn in by the planet's gravity, falling through the atmosphere and coming into being as a water molecule. It settles on a mountaintop in a specific location and time in the earth's history.
The particle then enters a river and is carried down the mountainside, interacting with other particles, elements, entities and environments along the way.
Having started this journey at the precise coordinates of space and time means the particle is now limited to the course and flow of a particular river, but it has agency over its direction within it, choosing which branching paths it takes into streams, lakes, bogs, springs, oceans or whirlpools.
Eventually, the particle rises as water vapor and joins a cloud cluster moved by air masses before it falls to earth once more as rain and starts a new journey in another place and point of origin.
From the day we are born, we enter a life that ripples out before us. The course of that life has its own variations, cycles and rhythms, affected by our biology, the turning of seasons, and the fluctuations of the people, environments, and situations we encounter.
15. TIME ~ Cycles, Loops & Legacies
Essay by Katarzyna Vedah. Mar. 1, 2020
Taking on the perspective of a water droplet, we may feel propelled by the momentum of our own river of time, and our journey may seem linear, even though we often find ourselves circling back, reliving the same routines, repeating themes and life lessons, caught in a loop of our thoughts, emotions and behaviors.
Yet taking the time to look back over the course of our lives may reveal patterns we had missed the first time. Becoming conscious of any repeating actions and reactions in ourselves and in our world could help to shift our decision-making process when faced with key choice-point moments leading to diverging life paths.
Without understanding the place and time we inhabit (in our personal life trajectory, our civilization's development, or in the course of human evolution) we may experience life as unpredictable, anxiously bobbing up and down on the surface of spacetime, feeling helpless and terrified of every ripple and wave.
Expanding our perception of time can change how we see ourselves, the world and the process of life. When our perception expands to encompass not just the linear progression of time, but its cyclical nature as well, we start to see things beyond the immediate moment.
When we expand beyond the life span of an individual, an empire, or a species, patterns start to emerge, when before there seemed only randomness and chaos.
What if we could play with the undulations and spirals of time, not as something to be feared or fought against, but harnessed as a force of change ~ an opportunity for focused experience, growth and evolution? What if we could respect the flow of our embodied existence like a surfer on the sea of space-time?
