In ancient myths of the Hero's journey, the state of a kingdom often reflected the state of its Queen and/or King. If s/he was out of balance, the kingdom became disordered and inhospitable to life. The goal of the Hero was to seek that which would re-establish the sacred order.

Likewise, our world could be said to reflect our collective states of mind. We can aid ourselves, individually and collectively, by seeking the balance that will restore our kingdom's sacred order. That journey may take many different forms depending on who we are and where we find ourselves.

Perhaps for most of our lives, we've strayed from our personal center by giving in to familial, societal and cultural pressures and expectations, gradually taking on roles and identities that were out of alignment with our core essence. Perhaps we've enacted these personas for so long that we've come to believe they are us.

Such disconnection from the truth of our own integral being can create a deep feeling of dissatisfaction and restlessness, constantly seeking externals to fill the feeling of isolation and emptiness that stems from the void of our own self-alienation.

The Stories We Tell

Essay by Katarzyna Vedah.  May 1, 2020

Seeking external distractions from this unsettled inner state may produce temporary relief. But when it returns, it churns in us a greater sense of frustration and powerlessness to change our disharmony. We may feel something is wrong, but we just can't put our finger on what it is.

Regardless of our disturbance, we may go about life as usual, playing the parts that are expected of us, trying to bury the sense that we've somehow lost something important, something precious, or running around seeking that treasure out in the world (or at least a good substitute.)

We may find guides and adversaries along our journey, positive and negative forces that are there to remind us of who we really are, to assist us in reclaiming our rightful paths.

Such a journey may take us into strange and foreign places that either reinforce our sense of being a powerless victim seeking rescue, or stretch and enhance our sense of agency as we find our inner capacity to respond as the hero of our lives.

Every day, each of us has a choice in how we approach our journeys ~

The question is, What are we feeding and cultivating in our lives?  What are we giving rise to through the focus and attention of our mental and emotional energy, as well as through our speech and actions?

And how can we reclaim the power of the original treasure that we ourselves are and restore the natural balance of our world?
